POLICE in West Devon are warning residents to read through their home insurance policies carefully, after learning some insurance companies do not pay out. The crime prevention officer for Devon and Cornwall, Angie Frost, attended a crime scene recently after burglars entered a home through a locked window which was ajar. The burglars took off the bars from outside the window and then reached through and dismantled the lock. When the owners of the home went to claim for what was stolen, they were told by the insurance company that it was not a forced entry and they could not claim. WPC Angie Frost contacted the insurance company who told her it considered the incident was not a forced entry as the window was open. ?The insurance company?s and the police?s idea of a forced entry are very different. In the end after I spoke to the insurance company they did pay out,? said WPC Frost. ?People need to read through their policies carefully as some companies do not clarify what will happen in these incidents. If it does not state you need to find out.?
