HORRABRIDGE scout group has been given almost £8,000 to keep 'scouting on into the new millennium'.

The award of £7,696 was made by the National Lotteries Charity Board, the first awards of the new millennium, to purchase camping equipment, uniforms and to meet the training costs of new scout leaders.

Cub scout leader Samantha Poulson was delighted.

'It's fantastic,' she said. 'We are going to be replacing worn out equipment and upgrading to give us a really good basis for all our activities.'

The group comprises cubs, scouts and beavers, totalling about 50 youngsters, both boys and girls.

Their equipment dates back some 25 years to when it split from the Walkhampton group.

'It's all getting very old, worn out and sad,' said Mrs Poulson.

The scout troop was only recently formed and some of the money will go towards the training of the new leaders.

'Everything's on the up here', said Mrs Poulson.

'This grant was really just the cherry on the top. All this equipment will allow us to scout on in the new millennium.'
