SURVIVORS have been rescued from a collapsed tower block in the earthquake hit city of Islamabad thanks to the work of a RAPID-UK Search and Rescue team and other international rescue crews. RAPID-UK, which is registered in Jacobstowe, sent two teams to Pakistan following the devastating earthquake. The first team has been searching a 12-storey apartment block in which 38 apartments collapsed and more than 60 people are believed still missing, using search dogs and specialist equipment such as Snake Eye cameras, CO2 probes and vibraphone sound location devices. Five rescues have been completed by RAPID-UK, including that of the wife and two-year-old son of a United Nations worker. Both survivors were brought out shortly after 8pm BST on Monday and taken to hospital. Neither is said to be suffering from any serious injuries. The team expects to remain searching the tower block for a number of days. The second RAPID team along with a CANIS dog team have been deployed to the town of Bagh, in response to a request from the United Nations in Muzaffarabad. The team will make an assessment about rescue requirements for the area and begin co-ordinating other teams that arrive. The massive earthquake with a 7.6 magnitude hit India and Pakistan on Saturday, and had an epicentre 93km north east of the capital Islamabad at Muzaffarabad. The death toll from the earthquake is estimated at more than 20,000 people, but could be even higher.
