The work of the Rotary Club both locally and in some of the most needy parts of the world was highlighted at an awareness day recently.
The day, organised by Tavistock Rotary Club in the town hall, included displays ranging from malaria and polio eradication in the Third World, stroke and prostate cancer awareness, Literacy Box and Water Aid as well as a variety of other youth, international and community projects.
A ShelterBox with its ten-man tent was set out. There was also information relating to Rotary's support for people with dementia and the support they give locally to Tavistock Memory Café.
In Bedford Square there was a Rotary-sponsored fire engine bound for Albania, the Rotary roadshow and vehicles and information from Tavistock Area Support Services – the charity that was benefactor of the day.
Andy Lyle, general manager of TASS, said, it was a wonderful opportunity for them to show what they did in supporting older people in Tavistock and for volunteer drivers to see what sort of vehicles they asked them to drive.
He said: 'We regularly have enquiries from people wanting to volunteer to drive but being in a position to show people was marvellous and during the day we had several offers of help.
'We were also able to talk to people about our new volunteer car service and what a difference that will make for local people.'
Wally Lake, president of Tavistock Rotary Club, said the event had been an extremely worthwhile exercise.
The successful day came to a conclusion with 'The FanTASStic Bash' in the town hall where more than 75 people enjoyed dancing the night away to the 'A Little Bit of This' Band.
