DESPITE heavy rain the civic parade held by Okehampton mayor Maureen McDonald proceeded through the streets of the town on Sunday.

Cllr McDonald led the parade, accompanied by councillors and members of many local organisations, including local cadet, scout and guide groups, as well as the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Round Table and Chamber of Commerce.

Music for the event was provided by Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band.

The parade went to Fairplace Church, where a packed church listened to the civic service taken by the mayor's chaplain, the Rev Philip Wagstaff.
