THE Counties? Western Morning News competition was held at Fingle Glen Golf Club on August 27.

The weather was not good and there were concerns that it would have to be cancelled, as was the South East Division which should have been held on August 12 at Teignmouth.

But although it rained all day, it was playable and the competition, a foursome stableford, was won by Fingle Glen with Torrington coming second in the team event.

The individual competition was also won by the home club, with Torrington second. Third were Dawn Phillott and Lorna Rolfe with 34 points, fourth were Amanda Clifford and Mo Huggins with 31.

Two other Okehampton teams, Eileen Harrison and Eileen Piper and Kay King and Kath Mansel, did well but lost out on countback.

On Wednesday the September medal was played in sunshine, and the Ladies? Golf Union Medal was won by Christine Stevens with a score of net 70, reducing her handicap from 24 to 22.

Second in the bronze division. also with net 70 (losing on countback), was Shirley Stunnell also reducing her handicap from 33 to 32. Marcia Holwill took the silver division on countback from Cherry James with net 71.

Christine and Ray Stevens had an excellent round of golf at Stover, playing the finals of the Bader Cup, a mixed foursomes stableford competition, which they won at Okehampton in the qualifier. They almost booked their prize ticket to Portugal. They were leaders in the clubhouse with 41 points for a very long time, but sadly were pipped at the post by a team with 42 points.
