NEW railings alongside the River Tavy between Abbey Bridge and the salmon leap are not proving popular with some people, Tavistock town councillors heard last week. Cllr Ted Sherrell said a dozen people had complained to him about the railings, installed to allay health and safety fears. ?I have great sympathy. We are spending a lot of money on things we don?t particularly want. It?s time that some stand is made against these rules and regulations ? they?re going to impoverish us all.? He recommended the issue of increasing health and safety legislation be raised with some of the large professional bodies to which the council belonged. Cllr Caroline Keane said: ?If the Grand Canyon isn?t fenced in, I?m not sure why we?ve had to do this!? But Cllr Brian Trew said: ?I think they look rather attractive. If we feel the legislation is wrong, the right place to deal with it is at the ballot box.?
