WITH costs for Sticklepath Fireshow rising every year, organisers have decided to hold several fundraising events.
Dave Goodwin, safety officer for the popular fireshow, said costs seemed to keep on going up. In addition, they had the problem that about every fourth or fifth year the weather was unkind, which caused the crowd size to shrink quite a lot.
?This has obvious knock-on effects to the amount of money we take on the gate,? he said.
?The committee is keen to keep the gate prices as low as possible, so we have decided to hold a few fundraising events throughout the year.?
Ian Crawford, fireshow chairman, said they were organising events with the emphasis on having fun as well as raising a few extra pounds.
?We hope there will be something for every fan of the fireshow to come along to and support while enjoying themselves,? he said.
The first event is a Horse Racing Night on Saturday, July 31 at the King?s Arms, South Zeal. The first race will be the Okehampton Glass Gold Cup, which will come under starter?s orders at 8.02pm in the Phoenix bar. There will be a prize for the most successful gambler on the night.
Summer quiz sheets, costing £1 each, will be available locally until the end of August, with the chance to win £20 or the booby prize of a fireshow wooden spoon. Sheets have to be returned by September 1 and can be obtained from the Devonshire, Taw Rivers Inns, the shop in Sticklepath, the King?s or Oxenham Arms, the Stores in South Zeal, Donald?s Menswear and Chastey?s Shoes in Okehampton, the Tors at Belstone or Linfords in North Tawton.
Future events will include a Casino Night and a 60s/70s disco in the autumn. Anyone who would like to help with fundraising is asked to contact Dave or Hilary on 01837 840334.
