RACHEL Hughes, 17, from Kelly College, won the national ten-mile cycling time trial championships held in Coventry last weekend.

In wet and windy conditions, Rachel battled it out with competitors from all over the UK and won her age group by more than a minute from her nearest rival.

Rachel, who is coached by director of swimming and triathlon Robin Brew, now sets her sights on the triathlon season ahead. Her first race will be the Great Wales International Triathlon on June 8 where she will have a chance to qualify for the Junior European Championships in Carlsbad later in July.

Louise Amery, 16, and Tom Phillips, 17, both triathletes also from Kelly College, were in action this weekend in one of the first races of the triathlon season, the Eton Super Sprint Championships which involved a 400m open water swim followed by a 20km cycle leg and a 5km run to finish.

Louise, in her first race of the season, lined up with a top class field of 150 women, including Olympic triathlete Julie Dibbens. Louise, in her best ever-open water swim, trailed the Olympian by a mere 20 seconds after the swim section. She worked hard through the bike and run sections to finish in a fantastic second place in the U17 category.

Not to be outdone team-mate Tom Phillips had a similar scenario in his event. Exiting the water in fifth place, Tom worked hard to maintain his position finishing the event in an improved eight minutes from last year. His final position was seventh in the U20 years age category. Both triathletes will also be preparing for the Great Wales International Triathlon in June.

Just to keep the Kelly swimmers in the frame Sophie Stanford, 14, was competing at the second round of the West Wales Championships in Swansea at the weekend where she won two gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle in personal best times.

This adds to the two gold medals that she won in the first round where she set a new West Wales record in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.
