there is a new addition on Roadford Lake — 'Mary Christina', a solar-powered boat, offering leisure 'cruises'.

The oblong, unconventional flat-sided boat glides gently over the water, allowing passengers to enjoy the beauty of the lake without the distracting noise of a motor.

Trips run from the shore below the visitor centre and café, across the water to the sailing centre or around the lake.

Carol and 'Captain' Tony's banter adds to the fun of the trip and Carol's commentary touches on the history of the valley and the bird-life around the reservoir.

Kitted out with all the necessary safety equipment, 'Mary Christina' takes up to 24 passengers and, in good weather, makes three or four hourly sailings from noon.

The stable, flat-bottomed boat is ideal for visitors of every age —from the middle of the reservoir, the lake and its surroundings, take on a fresh perspective.

The reservoir, completed in 1989, has a capacity of 730 acres of water but this year due to long, dry spells through the winter and spring, the water level is considerably reduced.

However, this has not hampered the solar boat nor the wind-surfers, kayak and dinghy sailors at the centre.

Carol and Tony have dreams for sunset cruises in conjunction with the visitors' centre and Lakeside café. They would also like to accommodate coach parties, WIs, local history and art groups.

Their most memorable trip was to transport a bride across the lake, in all her finery, for her wedding at the visitors' centre.
