AN annual swimathon in Bere Ferrers raised £250 to improve playing field facilities.

A total of 19 brave participants and an army of supporters rose early from their beds to catch the 9am high tide for the Norman Grills Quay to Quay Swimathon.

The challenge involved crossing the River Tavy from Bere Ferrers Quay to Blaxton Quay by any safe means, so non-swimmers were able to paddle across in kayaks.

Bev Slaughter, who captured the event on camera, said: 'Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

'It was a really fantastic morning.'

A book token went to Ben Poole, who was the quickest to swim there and back.

The swimathon was inspired by 82-year-old Norman Grills, husband of West Devon Borough councillor, and deputy mayor Christine Grills.

Born and brought up in the village, Mr Grills would regularly swim across the river between the two quays, sometimes delivering merchandise from the local shop to a resident at Blaxton Quay.

Unfortunately, ill health has prevented him from continuing with his swimming, but others have taken up the tradition he started.
