IF you thought you saw cavewomen, superheroes and human-sized playing cards walking around your local last Friday, you might have thought you were seeing things — but it was all part of this year's Okehampton Round Table five-legged race.
The fun was in aid of Children in Need, with the event raising more than £1,200.
Teams of four were tied at the ankle and raced around the pubs in the town, having to consume a drink at each. Bottles of cava, donated by Waitrose were given as prizes for various categories, including best fancy dress.
The category, judged by Okehampton mayor Maureen McDonald was won by 'Kiss This', dressed in crazy 80s gear and face-paint as a tribute to 80s American rock band KISS. The team were also the first all-male team over the finishing line, with all-ladies' team 'The Incredibles' the first to complete the challenge.
The first mixed team over the line were 'The Unhealthy Lot-tery', all staff from the Manor and Ashbury Hotels. The team also raised the most money, a magnificent £800 for the pot.
Okehampton Round Table chairman Chris Luxton said: 'I am overwhelmed by the total raised. With the problems people are facing with the economy and job losses, a smaller total was expected, but it just goes to show how generous the people of the area are.'
Okehampton Round Table expressed thanks to all participants, the pubs of Okehampton for taking part, Waitrose for the prizes, and St John Ambulance, who were on duty supporting the event.
