QUEEN Mother's 100th birthday — Friday August 4. Never in this country's history has there been a similar occasion and so the town council invited the chamber of trade to join with them and organise a celebration in tribute to the loyal service by this great lady to our country.

The day will be one that has something for all members of the community from the youngest to the oldest and so be a real unifying and enjoyable occasion.

The idea of a street party was put forward but unless the government declare it a public holiday then the logistics involved in road closures may be insurmountable and so the main birthday picnic party will be held in Simmons Park where it is proposed that the younger members will be entertained and be able to enjoy a fun-fair in complete safety.

A cream tea and a sing-along for senior citizens will be held in the charter hall and plans are well advanced for a scintillating photographic exhibition in the museum depicting the Queen Mother as she was in each of the decades of her life and at the same time portraying life in Okehampton during each of the periods.

As other organisations see these plans coming to fruition they are coming up with suggestions and so it should be a really great day.

Unfortunately this cannot be done without money and so merely as organisers we are appealing for contributions. It is hoped that you will be generous and in anticipation we ask that cheques should be made payable to QMCC-2000 and sent to the town hall.

Any underspend following publication of audited accounts will be dedicated to a specific piece of medical equipment at our new hospital planned for Crediton Road.

Put Okehampton really on the map as a place where we wish to be known that we are proud of what an example the Queen Mother has done for this nation during her life.
