THE South West Sinfonietta Wind Ensemble gave an entertaining concert at Kelly College recently. They began with a serenade which was 'quintessential Mozart'.The octet of oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons gave a great warmth and richness to the sound. This was followed by a Beethoven trio for two oboes and cor anglais. Just three instruments managed to present a symphony in miniature, without losing the intimacy of chamber music, the instruments speaking to each other and singing together. The first half finished with five colourful and amusing dances by the Hungarian Denes Agay, scored for five instruments. Gershwin's 'I Got Rhythm' opened the second half. Hearing a familiar tune on flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon gave it a new sound and vibrancy. The final work, Gounoud's Petite Symphony, was just that, a richly textured work for nine instruments blending superbly and handing the melody seamlessly to each other. This is a group of musicians clearly well used to performing together. Each is more than competent on his or her own instrument, yet well able to blend into the larger group.Definitely an ensemble worth hearing again. Felicity Barnaby
