IT was a fantastic day of cross country at the third and final meeting of the Tavistock Area Primary Schools Cross Country League organised by Tavistock Athletic Club. More than 100 children from 11 schools took part in the event hosted by Meavy School. Recent wet conditions made the course soft and sticky and a challenge for all concerned. The girls went off first. Sarah Hornby from Whitchurch has improved with every race and headed towards the finish line on the shoulder of Leonie Isaacs from Milton Abbot who won the last race at Mary Tavy. In the closing stretch Sarah put in a final surge and won. Annie Johnson from Meavy came 3rd followed by Georgina Deacon, Princetown and Charlotte Herdman, St Peters. Whitchurch took the glory from the first race which inspired their boys to fantastic results in the next. Robert Beveridge and Dan Quick repeated their success at Mary Tavy by finishing 1st and 2nd again, followed home by Benni Evans to make it a 1-2-3 for Whitchurch School. Gareth Farmer from St Andrews came home in 4th position and Sam Eaton finished in 5th. The prize for the winning team (boys and girls results combined) from a large school went to Whitchurch whilst the prize for a small school went to Milton Abbot. The league trophies were then awarded with Whitchurch winning the girls? league, followed by St Peter?s in 2nd and St Andrew?s in 3rd. Whitchurch won the boys? league with St Andrew?s coming 2nd and Milton Abbot 3rd. Individual awards for results in all three events were presented next. Leonie Isaacs (Milton Abbot) won the girls? prize with Emma Champion (St Peter?s) 2nd and Sarah Hornby (Whitchurch) 3rd. Boys? winner was Robert Beveridge (Whitchurch), with Sam Eaton (Milton Abbot) 2nd and Gareth Farmer (St Andrew?s) coming 3rd. All athletes who took part in the series were awarded with medals.
