YEAR 5 children at Winkleigh Primary have learned a variety of practical skills — by setting up their own restaurant. Shortly before the end of term, pupils held a restaurant evening at school for their parents, friends, family, councillors and school governors. The children did all of the work themselves, from conducting market research, designing the menu, calculating costs, and working out turnover to predicting their profit margins. The children also contacted a range of companies to ask for donations to a raffle, for which they sold tickets during the run up to the event. Year 5 teacher Charlotte Marsh said: 'The children learned so much from the project, from how to work together as a team to how to run a business. 'The children made a phenomenal £1,000 profit from the evening.' This money will go through with them to Year 6, where they will put it towards running their own small businesses. The profit generated from that will go towards paying for an end of Year 6 trip to a destination of their choice.
