UNDETERRED by the bleak conditions more than 100 children from the Tavistock Area Primary Schools turned out at Mary Tavy for the second in the three race series of cross-country events. Organised by Tavistock Athletic Club, eleven schools were represented, two more ? Princetown and Gulworthy ? than in the first event in January. The girls? race opened proceedings and winner Leonie Isaacs, from Milton Abbot, stamped her authority on the race from the outset. Anna Court from St Andrews made a valiant effort and finished second. Storming in third was Sarah Hornby from Whitchurch, whilst Emma Champion, St Peters, and Andi Romaro, Whitchurch, picked up fourth and fifth positions respectively. It was the battle of Whitchurch in the boys? race with an excellent tussle between Robert Beveridge and Dan Quick for the top positions. Dan made all the running from the start but Robert made his assault on the lead from about 400 metres to take first place. Sam Eaton, Milton Abbot, was third with Gareth Farmer, St Andrews, in fourth and Harry Eaton, Milton Abbott, fifth. Whitchurch now lead, ahead of previous leaders St Peters. St Andrews are third and Milton Abbot move up to fourth. Whitchurch also head the girls? table with St Andrews at the top of the boys? league. The final event will be held at Meavy on March 22.
