Lydford School are one of the schools taking part this week in a science and art project, looking at what bugs and insects have been collected in traps laid in the Lydford Gorge overnight. A scientist from the University of Plymouth will help them identify them and a local artist will help them produce artwork for display in the bird hide. The project will attract 1,000 people from schools, community groups and members of the public inspiring them to learn about and care for the wildlife around them. Participants will discover the intricate beauty of the components that make up our forest systems. Activities will include bug hunts, sweep netting, mammal trapping, pitfall traps, bird watching, plant observation and looking at animal tracks. Catherine Maddern, visitor services manager for the National Trust on Dartmoor, said: 'It's a fantastic opportunity for the three organisations involved to work in partnership to engage and inspire people of all ages to explore the wildlife they can find on their doorstep as well as getting people to tap into their creative talents.' Sunday is an open day on for people to explore the Lyd Valley wildlife.
