PUPILS at a West Devon 'Eco-School' got their green-fingers working to plant trees in the school grounds as part of an EDF Energy initiative across Britain.

A team from EDF Energy Plymouth helped pupils on the eco-committee of St Andrew's Primary School in Buckland Monachorum, plant 50 trees as part of EDF Energy Green Britain Day.

The pupils planted various tree species, including wild cherry, hawthorn and hornbeam, and will look after the trees for two years before re-planting them at sites within the community.

Green Britain Day, inspired by London 2012, is a day to showcase and celebrate what the nation is doing in the race against climate change, and inspire others to join in.

Teacher at St Andrew's, Ros Knight, said: 'Pupils at the school, which has twice gained a full Eco-School award, are very enthusiastic about caring for the environment, growing things and becoming more efficient at reducing, re-using and recycling waste within the school. Pupils hope their efforts over the past two terms will result in less school waste and even less being sent to landfill sites.'

EDF Energy supplied the school with the trees, stakes and plant mats, as well as a £50 token to help the school purchase gardening equipment.

The pupils will now be busy trying to keep the saplings well watered in the hot weather.
