MORE than 50 pug dogs brought their owners to the Wales and West of England Pug Dog Rescue show at St Paul's Church, Yelverton on Sunday.

Area co-ordinator Maureen Lee from Tavistock said the organisation was dedicated to rescue and rehoming this particular breed of dogs.

'We take in about five or six over a 12 month period. It is not usually through ill-treatment but because of the death of an owner, or someone having to go into care or similar circumstances which means the dogs cannot stay at home any longer,' said Maureen. She has kept pugs for 32 years and currently owns seven.

'Once you have owned one you become quite smitten because they are such attractive characters,' she said.

'They are very loyal and great fun. They adore children and make ideal companions for them because their temprement is superb.'

Maureen says the dogs are very popular and there is a waiting list for would-be owners who have already been vetted as suitable by the rescue group.
