ONCE again Tavistock Town Council have shown themselves to be overwhelmed by inaction, and have declined to pass a resolution to make Tavistock a GM-free zone, despite overwhelming indications that this is what the public wants.
At the same time the government has sought to bury news of cross-contamination in the British countryside from GM oilseed rape to wild related species, by releasing this information to the media late on Christmas Eve.
Unlike the town council, the government is very much aware of public concern.
This is a local issue which should be taken much more seriously by the council. Local farmers, traders, gardeners, bee-keepers and others all stand to lose if GM crops are allowed to be grown in the locality. Organic produce in particular will be in danger of losing its organic status.
If people want to continue eating locally produced, good quality food, as they have always done, perhaps they should consider the record of local councillors on this issue when they vote in the May council elections.
