A FUNDRAISING event for Help for Heroes was held in Bere Alston recently, collecting more than £600.

Three local mothers, Julie Marks, Fran Luxton and Fern Hughes, who have sons that have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan or who have close contacts with the services, organised the event at Holy Trinty Church Hall last month.

The day was well attended by the community who enjoyed refreshments, light snacks, locally made jewellery, a tombola and raffle, and the charity's merchandise. There was a soldier from the Tank Regiment and a Royal Marine both in uniform, who attended. They mingled with the crowd talking about their experiences and highlighting the work of the armed services. Also on show were photos from Iraq and Afghanistan, letters from soldiers to home, medals, and other articles of interest.
