HAVING lived in Tavistock for the last 17 years and having always paid my local taxes on time, I was incensed by the 21 per cent increase in council tax imposed upon me this year.

After continually failing to get answers from the town council regarding their legal case which was the reason for the increase, I decided that I would protest by only paying a 10 per cent increase in council tax and withhold the other 11 per cent which was really the only avenue of protest left open. I therefore paid £110 per month instead of £121.

The arrogance sunk to new depths this month, as after only three months a summons was issued against me by West Devon Council — which collects the council tax on behalf of the town council — for what was arrears of £33. This summons also incurred a cost of a further £35 and if I continued my protest and attended court, a further £35 costs would be payable.

Now we are told that the council legal case has been concluded and yet still they will not tell the council tax payers the outcome.

Perhaps it's time for Tavistock Town Council to adopt a new motto: Pay up and shut up.
