THERE were 162 members taking to the fairways at Okehampton Golf Club on Saturday for the annual professionals?s day. Ashleigh Moon, the club professional, split the field into two divisions and giving a total of 28 prizes, he made it a splendid day which everyone enjoyed. The weather was perfect which helped the standard of golf to a high level, bringing out the competitive streak in the players! The competition was a Fourball Better Ball Stableford and winning the First Division which was for pairs of a combined gross handicap of 33 and below were Alan Hough and Jeff May with 45 points. Also on 45 were Barry Coaker and Mary Keir and Pete Okopski and Bob Barrett so the first three were decided on back nine countback. Fourth, fifth & sixth were also decided on countback as all had 44 points. Mark Wonnacott and Nick Reilly were fourth, fifth were Martin Cox and Colin Cornwall, and sixth were Simon Gibbons and Richard Johnson. The division two was for pairs with a combined gross handicap of 34 and above. First were a father and son pairing of Andy and Ollie Kirby with 46; second were Peter and Shirley Stunnel on 45; third Mark Lander and Mark Strong on 44. The remaining winners all had 43 decided on countback - fourth was Harry and Phil Hawking, fifth Matt Mills and Matt Milford and sixth Dave Wooldridge and Rich Camies. On Wednesday the ladies played their qualifying medal. Pam Jarman won the silver division with net 69; second was Marcia Jones on back nine countback from Marcia Holwill with a scored net of 71. The bronze division was won by Shirley Stunnel with net 68, second was Jane Warren on net 71 and third was Sally Griffin on net 79. In the Presidents Trophy Okehampton were at home against Sidmouth. Marcia Holwill first out,won 5-3; Penny Deakin won 6-4; Marcia Jones won 5-3; Pam Jarman won 6-5; Lin Atkinson won 3-2; Cherry James won 3-2 and Mary Keir won 6-5. This makes it a second successive 7-0 victory. Mo Huggins played at Tiverton in the Spring lady captains meeting having an excellent game to score 35 to come second in the silver division.
