I AM writing in whole-hearted agreement with Deborah Hosegood, who was dismayed that Okehampton Town Council has decided to spend £14,000 on a sculpture, when there is more obvious need in the community.
Not only the play area in Simmons Park which Mrs Hosegood quite rightly pointed out, but also the great need of a play area in Gibland Park estate, also highlighted quite recently in the Okehampton Times.
There is of course the BMX area for the older children, badly needed. All these things for families with children, to cut the risk of an accident down.
I'm sure there are many other worthwhile groups which could have been helped in a practical way in this town also, not just the children's areas.
No matter how the council try and justify their latest decision, it is my opinion in this instance, they have got their priorities upside down and wrong, because in actual fact we will only have a very costly, dead piece of metal, which will be of no earthly benefit to anybody.
To enhance people's lives, surely, is more important than to enhance a building and a pavement!
