PRINCETOWN Horticultural Society held their official opening day for their community allotment last on Saturday, September 12.

The society, made up of a small group of people, started discussions in February with Princetown United Church about using a piece of land to the side of the church for the allotments.

The community allotment consists of two garden beds, a raised bed for people with disabilities, a rockery, a compost bin built out of pallets and wooden flooring to edge garden beds. A local garage provided a great supply of used tyres to grow potatoes.

The group is affiliated with the Royal Horticultural Society and have aims and objectives for the next 12 months, which will include seed sharing, visitors and speakers once a month and day visits to gardens.

Princetown Horticultural Society also hopes to teach local children where fruit and vegetables come from.

Dawn Wood, member of the group said: ‘We are calling out for more members as we are expanding. One kind resident of Princetown has said that we can clear their garden and put our polytunnel there so we are also able to bring our plants on through winter. As I’m sure most people can appreciate, it can be unpredictable on the moors.’
