THE 50th anniversary of the move to its current North Road premises has been celebrated by Lifton Primary School.

The school held numerous events throughout the week, with visits from previous staff and pupils who described to the children what life was like at Lifton School in the past.

The school last Thursday held a special 1960s-themed day, and staff and pupils dressed up in their finest '60s regalia. There was a special 1960s school dinner in a marquee in the playground followed by a fashion show and dancing.

The week culminated in a special celebration assembly on Friday with guests including the mayor and mayoress of West Devon Cllr Donald Horn and Mary Horn and West Devon MP Geoffrey Cox.

Members of Lifton Parish Council attended to watch the pupils sing, dance and talk about what they had learned about life in the 1960s compared with today.

There was an official opening of the school's new outdoor musical instruments, a presentation of a mural painted by the children to go in the Lifton bus shelter, a time capsule was buried, and a tree-planting ceremony took place.

The ceremonial trees were purchased thanks to a donation from Western Power Distribution's community tree scheme.

Jane Hart, from the Silvanus Trust, which manages the scheme locally, said: 'Western Power Distribution were very keen to support this celebratory event.'

Following the event there was a tea party and a barbecue.

Headteacher Mrs Kui Holmes said 'I would like to personally thank the staff , pupils, visitors, and everyone who helped to make this event such a resounding success.

'I hope these wonderful memories will carry everyone through the next 50 years.'
