THERE was an exciting finish to group one of the second annual Whitchurch Wayfarers Primary Schools? District Tournament held at the club on Monday. Tavistock County Primary went into group one as favourites, but lost the first game in a tight match against local rivals St Peters. Bickleigh Down got off to a good start, beating Lydford, Mary Tavy and St Peters to lead the tournament on six points with two games to go. In the other games, Tavistock County Primary got off the mark with wins against Whitchurch and Mary Tavy, while St Peters kept the pressure up on Bickleigh with a win over Whitchurch in their second game. The most competitive game of the tournament was between Lydford and Mary Tavy. The match between the two village schools went to the last ball, with Mary Tavy needing to take a wicket to win and Lydford needing to not get out for victory. Lydford managed to survive the last ball and picked up their first win. In the fourth round of games Whitchurch opened the league up by beating Bickleigh Down. St Peters beat Mary Tavy to put them joint top and Tavistock County Primary made it a three-way tie by beating Lydford. With the last round of games leaving three teams with everything to play for, two of them found themselves playing each other. Tavistock County Primary took to the field against Bickleigh Down and finished with an easy victory over them. This left St Peters needing a win against Lydford to tie for first place. St Peters made short work of Lydford and finished joint first with Tavistock County Primary. In the event of a tie the team taking the most wickets would be declared the winners and Tavistock County Primary just managed to edge St Peters out, taking one more wicket than their rivals. Mary Tavy School were awarded the Fair Play Trophy after demonstrating good sportsmanship and great team sprit thoughout.
