A PRESENTATION recently took place at Tavistock Golf Club for the victorious team which won the English Golf Union Champion Club tournament at Sandwell Park, Solihull, last September. The team of Graham Ruth, James Ruth, Alan Gawman and reserve Duncan File qualified by winning the Devon Championship at Yelverton in May. Then in September at Sandwell Park the team triumphed over some very competitive teams including the defending champions and host club. As a result of this victory the team qualified to represent England in the European Team Championship at Glyfada, near Athens, in early November. The Club team of Graham and James Ruth, Alan Gawman and reserves Duncan File and Andy Coe, with several supporters from the club, flew to Glyfada to represent England in the European Team Championship. On the first day in very difficult conditions the team lay in second place. Although the second day saw conditions ease, the team did not fare quite as well, slipping to fourth place overall. Unfortunately, illness struck James, Duncan and Andy after a visit to a local restaurant, who were too ill to make it as far as the course itself. Alan and Graham did their very best given the circumstances and eventually finished in a very creditable sixth place, the best of all four home nations. At the presentation, team captain Graham Ruth spoke of the excellent golf the team played to qualify to play in Athens. He thanked the Devon and English Golf Unions for their support and gave special thanks to county coach and Tavistock professional, Dominic Rehaag.
