HATHERLEIGH pre-school is celebrating the start of the new millennium with a positive Ofsted report.

The pre-school, which operates every morning in Hatherleigh Town Hall providing education and care for children over the age of three, has been noted by inspectors for its quality of teaching, partnership with parents and stimulating activities.

The report stated that the pre-school activities promoted the children's education in the nationally approved six areas of learning — language and literacy, mathematics, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development, creative development and personal and social development — ensuring that the children progressed with confidence to the national curriculum age of five.

Particular praise was given to the close links the pre-school had with the primary school and the local community. Good use was made in the curriculum of the opportunities to respond to religious, cultural and environmental events taking place in and around Hatherleigh.

The programme for physical development was singled out as a strong feature and there was a good range of equipment and games both inside the hall and in the enclosed playground area, said inspectors.

The partnership with parents and carers was described as good and every opportunity was given for them to become involved with their children's learning.

Quality of teaching was deemed to be good with knowledgeable, experienced staff working effectively as a team and interacting well with the children at their level.

A two to four-year Ofsted re-inspection has been recommended.
