TAVISTOCK Hospital has been given top marks for its cleanliness.

The hospital was one of four community hospitals in the South Hams and West Devon NHS Trust Area to be awarded the maximum score of four points by the Patient Environment Action Team — PEAT — which visited last month to check on levels of cleanliness and tidiness.

The hospital was inspected by the PEAT, which included a patient from the hospital. Questionnaires were also distributed among the patients.

Sally Foxhall, chairman of the primary care trust praised the staff: 'This excellent result reflects the hard work and dedication of the hospital staff and the high quality of patient care they deliver for the local population.'

Kate Priestley from the department of health said a score of four should be a source of pride for hospital managers and staff.

She said it meant standards were very much in tune with those required in a modern NHS and that considerable thought had clearly been given to the quality of the patient experience.

Sue Scrivener, locality manager for the hospital and associated community services, said: 'We were delighted. It's very much teamwork here with everybody working very hard to keep the hospital clean and tidy.

'All credit is due to everyone who has worked so hard.'
