ONE man's determination to shed some extra pounds gained plenty more pounds for terminally ill children.
Darren Heywood, who works at ATS in Tavistock, took on the challenge of asking people to sponsor him to lose weight in a bid to raise money for Children's Hospice South West.
Through hard work, determination, and the help of personal trainer Matt Luxton, Darren managed to lose 24lbs and raise more than £250.
Darren said: 'I was really looking for a challenge and really wanted to help a charity while improving my health.
'I was approached by Matt and he and I decided that we really wanted to raise as much money as possible for CHSW.
'My main reason for choosing CHSW was not only that it is a local charity but it is for terminally ill children who will never live to reach my age or even younger. Also as Christmas was approaching and we would all have had a good Christmas, these children wouldn't have had half as much as we do, so I was hoping the money raised could help, even if it was a small bit, just so it could help the children enjoy themselves.'
Darren said he was a little depressed at his weight after seeing holiday photos and wanted to look good for his brother's impending wedding.
'I was well aware that my weight, particularly around the midriff, and I had read about the implications of this on the likelihood of getting diabetes and heart disease.
'Previously in my attempts to lose weight I have had no support. Having Matt as my coach has been so motivating.'
Darren was hoping to lose a stone in a month but with Matt's exercise regime, a cookbook and support he managed to lose just over two stone in four weeks.
He said: 'I lost just over 20 inches in the month, the most pleasing for me was the five inches off the waist.
'Losing a stone more than I originally planned was such a good feeling and I feel so much happier for it and a lot more healthy.
'It has not only helped in my daily life, but I am more agile, more confident and a lot happier within myself.
'I would like to thank everyone for their sponsorship, and particularly the people of Tavistock for their continued support.
'The team at ATS have been amazing, reminding me of times to have certain meals, words of encouragement and general support.
'Also a massive thank you to Matt Luxton for his professional approach, his knowledge and his skills as a coach.'
