YOUNGSTERS in the Monksmead area will be able to practice their world-cup football skills right outside their doors, thanks to a joint effort between West Devon Borough Council, Tavistock Town Council and the police.
The lonesome goalpost that has been on land owned by the borough council at the bottom of Monksmead has been joined by a mate, meaning the youngsters can work off their energy in the time-honoured way — by bending it like Beckham!
The project was taken forward by West Devon's community safety officer, Louisa Wall, following up an idea from PCSO Kevin Williams. Tavistock Town Council came up trumps with a matching goalpost and the manpower to put it up.
West Devon Councillor Adam Bridgewater, ward member for the Monksmead area, said: 'I think that this is a great initiative. Sport in Tavistock is on the increase; the new track and artificial pitch at Tavistock College, an Olympic training camp bid and a host of sporting talent in the borough are a credit to all local volounteers and clubs.
'Long may it continue as it is important that we get youngsters out of the house and taking part in activities that will increase their standard of health.'
