THE villagers of Buckland Monachorum turned out in force recently to bid farewell to their beloved postman, who retired after 37 years’ service.
Peter Dillon was shocked to see people lining the streets to wish him well on his last round in the village.
He received cards and gifts from villagers, including the presentation of a framed painting by a local artist from Drake Manor Inn landlady Mandy Robinson.
Village resident Celia Steven said: ‘He is so well thought of in the village.
‘He is like an institution and just like how posties used to be — caring about the community they were working in.
‘He would always go the extra mile, always had a smile on his face and it was always a pleasure to see him.
‘He will be very much missed.’
Instead of giving cards, a group of residents presented a book that they had written little messages in.
Celia said small groups had gathered in various streets in the village to bid him farewell.
‘There was a tear or two. I don’t think he quite expected it,’ she said.
