TOASTED teacakes, crumpets and puppets proved a real attraction at the innovative Candlemas Tea service organised by St Paul's Church, Gulworthy, and held at Hocklake Barns, home of the Collingridges.
Aimed at 'children' from 8 to 80, this event drew a crowd of almost 60, with many young people. It was well supported by other churches from the local mission community group, including Brentor, Tavistock and Whitchurch as well as Bere Alston.
The informal service was led by reader Wendy Roderick who explained a little about the old festival of Candlemas and supervised the lighting of candles made by the children of Gulworthy's after-school JAM Club (Jesus And Me).
Two young church members did the bible reading and prayers, and everyone joined in the hymns. The St Andrew's puppeteers from Whitchurch gave two delightful presentations, setting feet tapping with a spirited group rendering of 'This Little Light of Mine'.
Wendy thanked all those involved in organising the service. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a cosy tea and chat as toasted teacakes and crumpets were served. Donations totalling £20 were given to the Children's Hospice SouthWest. This was the first of the special fifth Sunday services that the St Paul's team has planned for this year.
