AN invitation to participate in a discussion on how to help the community deal with the effects of the credit crunch has been extended to people in West Devon.

Tavistock and Villages Development Forum, made up of representatives from organisations who work with the statutory bodies, meets once a month to discuss community-related issues.

Westden — previously known as West Devon Environmental Network — is a community organisation with a remit to work with communities to find practical solutions to the inter-linked environmental, social and economic challenges in rural areas.

Westden is organising this month's forum and is keen to talk to people about community projects, including a drop-in resource centre in Tavistock which could provide a place where people can network; and to discuss community allotments.

Geri Laithwaite, co-ordinator for Westden, said: 'Most people are going to be affected by the recession — whether it's losing a job, financial problems, or reduced pensions. We will be discussing how we can best work together to help the community.

'We're sure there are 101 things we can start doing to help each other through the turmoil of the credit crunch — car sharing, a time bank, co-operatives, skill-sharing, village shops, etc.

'If you have ideas or would like to know more, please come to the open forum.'

The forum will be held on Tuesday (February 10) from 2pm to 4pm at the council chamber in Tavistock. For more information contact Westden on 01822 618715 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
