THE upcoming town council by-election for Tavistock North Ward provides an early opportunity for us to question the level of support the candidates have for the council?s policy of ?No Community Use of the Pannier Market?. I would urge everyone in the ward to examine the pamphlets, to question each candidate and then ask if they (the candidates) support the view of the town council that to provide local charities with the use of the pannier market for a few days of the year will result in a financial Armageddon for Tavistock Or, are they fully aware of the work carried out in Tavistock and the surrounding villages by local charities, and feel that the provision of these few days to raise vital and urgent funds is the very least that the town council can do to support them? Any replies obtained will, I am sure, be closely considered when casting your votes. Bryan Podmore Friends of Tavistock Area Support Services I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the comments made by Alex Mettler, Stephen Fryer and Jeffrey Stackhouse concerning the decision by Tavistock Town Council to deny the community the right to use the pannier market on the fifth Saturday in a month from 2006. Was the first step taken this year by the drastic reduction of the number of stalls available for community use? I would like to ask those of you who support and appreciate the work done by local charities to make sure the town council is aware that you object to this unfair policy. The charity Bonanza came into being to give small charities the opportunity to use a popular central venue to raise funds, each using two or three tables. Many do not have sufficient volunteers or goods to hire a hall on their own. It has been proven that ?people power? works, so use your voice to try and ensure that community events are allowed to continue in the pannier market. Mrs Peta Humphries Tavistock Area Support Services MAY we say how sorry we were to hear that the charity events in the pannier market are to cease in 2006. All the organisations involved must rely on the proceeds generated on these occasions. We certainly do, as we are a small, largely self-funded independent group. Our other fundraising venture is a street collection on Friday July 22 so let?s hope for good weather! Mrs Lesley Friend Secretary Tavistock Physically Challenged Group
