POLICE are warning people that messing with road signs is an arrestable offence, following a number of incidents over the past two weeks on the A30 between Whiddon Down and Okehampton.

Sgt Alastair Davison said the culprits, who were turning directional signs and confusing drivers, were causing danger to road-users and would be prosecuted for it.

'Well-minded citizens have been stopping and correcting signs and in the process putting themselves in danger,' he said. 'Whoever is turning these signs probably thinks it is a bit of a laugh, but it is really very dangerous.'

The Merrymeet Roundabout is one of the hot spots with other sections of the dual-carriageway between Whiddon Down and Okehampton also being hit.

If anyone has any information they should contact Sgt Davison through the police central switchboard on 08705 777444.
