POLICE are asking Tavistock traders to keep boxes and other inflammable material inside their premises overnight, following two fires in the town this week.

On Sunday night vandals set fire to boxes and rubbish outside the Youthwize building in Pixon Lane causing £250 of damage.

And members of the public put out a fire after cardboard, wood and rubbish was set alight between Paddons Row and The Arcade on Monday evening.

PC Mark Sloman said: 'Although no serious damage was caused, potentially it could have been quite serious as many of the buildings are timber-framed in that area.

'We are asking traders not to put out their rubbish overnight to provide less of a target.'

Anyone with any information regarding the two incidents can contact PC Larry Base through the force central switchboard on 08705 777444 or the Crimestoppers Freephone 0800 555111.
