DRIVERS are being warned they will face serious consequences if they get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs this summer.

The annual summer drink drive campaign will run between Monday, June 1 and Tuesday, June 30.

Devon and Cornwall Constabulary will be working with other police forces across the region undertaking breath tests on every driver involved in a collision as well as any driver committing a traffic offence.

During last year's campaign, local officers administered more than 3,000 breath tests to drivers with 292 refusing, failing or giving a positive reading.

Inspector Richard Pryce, of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary's traffic unit, said: 'The consequences of being caught drink driving are extensive — including a minimum 12-month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

'Our advice to drivers is not to get behind the wheel after drinking any alcohol at all, as research shows that even one drink can impair your driving — motorists just shouldn't take the risk.

Anyone who suspects a vehicle is being driven by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs can call the police on 999, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the non-emergency number on 08452 777444.
