DEVON and Cornwall Police this week appealed to members of the public to come forward, following the sentencing of a serial conman from Callington.

John Keady, also known as Peter Berry, was jailed for five years, three months by Truro Crown Court last Tuesday, following a guilty plea of deception, theft and fraud.

The court heard that Keady had posed as a successful businessman, world class kayaker and international yachtsman. He targeted professional women in their 30s and 40s, pretending to house-hunt as he took them to view multi-million pound homes.

The court heard the charges related to eight victims, including Keady's own mother, Elizabeth Berry, who lost more than £80,000 after he applied for loans and used credit cards in her name.

The court was told he persuaded his internet girlfriends to lend him money using a web of lies and stories.

He was charged with offences totalling £80,000 — but the police say the true extent of his crimes is much higher, as they believe many victims have yet to come forward.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: 'It is suspected that Keady has been deceiving vulnerable professional women using newspaper and internet dating sites for the past 20 or so years.

'Post sentencing, I have received numerous calls regarding Keady and suspect more to follow.

'I would appeal for anybody who has been subjected to this type of crime to come forward and not feel embarrassed about doing so.'

The spokesperson said internet dating sites could be successful and a great way to meet people.

But she warned that people using them should be vigilant when asked information which could disclose personal information, particularly when those answers could relate to security answers relevant to telephone or internet banking.

'If your instinct is telling you that something is not quite right, seek advice from a friend or colleague and if it doesn't feel right, listen to yourself,' said the spokesperson.

Anyone who has information which may help the police in this matter is urged to contact PC Rachel Short at Saltash Police Station, on 08452 777444.
