POLICE in Tavistock are appealing for witnesses, after an incident involving a motorbike and an elderly couple.

PC Dominic Waites said the couple were driving from Princetown towards Tavistock at around 1pm on Saturday when they were passed by a large group of around 20 motorbikes.

PC Waites said as the bikes drove by, someone riding a blue Kawasaki leaned out and punched the wing mirror off the couple's car.

PC Waites said he believed it must have been a pillion rider who had committed the offence, rather than the driver of the bike.

'The wing mirror was definitely punched off — the elderly couple are quite shocked and appalled by the incident,' he said.

PC Waites said enquiries were continuing and police believe given the large number of bikes, it was likely to have been an organised ride.

He appealed for any witnesses to contact police or any motorcyclists within the group to come forward.

'The police appreciate that motorcyclists are often criticised for their driving — if we can clear this up it will be of positive benefit to bikers in the future,' he said.

Anyone with information should call PC Waites at Tavistock Police Station, quoting crime ref JT/03/1206.
