VISITORS got the chance to look around a fully operational quarry as Meldon Quarry held its annual open day last Saturday (September 6).

Brandon Aggregates opened Meldon Quarry to give members of the public a chance to see the quarry operating as it would on any other day.

New viewing areas were designed for this year?s open day, one of which offered the chance to walk through an air raid shelter last used during the Second World War.

The highlight of the day for many who came was the chance to witness a primary blast designed to produce 20,000 tonnes of rock.

Alan Evans, Meldon Quarry manager, said the open day had been ?very successful? with the number of people turning up exceeding expectations. He said the very rare chance for the public to view a primary blast had proved to be a particularly big draw.

Guided tours of the whole quarry site by minibus were run throughout the day, with around 230 people being able to take advantage of a guided tour.

A huge selection of photographs of the quarry ?past and present ? were also on display in the quarry main office. Various videos were also on show during the day and a full range of company products could also be seen in the main office area.
