AN OPEN night and barbecue at Okehampton's ATC headquarters was a great success with plenty of food, drill displays, a field gun run and assault course demonstrations.
The girls and boys of the squadron explained how the discipline which they had experienced helped them in their everyday lives and helped them face up to their disappointments.
Only recently the headquarters had been entered and a go-cart built by the youngsters was stolen and vandalised. A member of the Royal British Legion, hearing of their loss, brought along a plate, decorated with a Spitfire, to raise funds to help rebuild the go-cart.
The young people meet every week for training, and some fun, and regularly go on educational trips to RAF establishments.
One member, James Stacey, has also had the honour of being the standard bearer for the Royal British Legion in Okehampton and was selected to line the route at Exeter Cathedral when the Queen made her visit in May.
There are currently 31 cadets led by Flight Lieutenant Michelle Freeburn, and Flying Officers Philip Mingham and Andy Savine. Anyone aged 13 to 18 can join and the squadron's Monday meetings take place between 6pm and 9.30pm.
