CONSERVATION projects to keep members of Sticklepath and Okehampton Conservation Group (STOC) busy for months ahead have been identified at the group?s recent planning meeting.

The first job on the agenda is tomorrow with gorse clearance on Brenamoor Common at Belstone.

Other planned work includes woodland management at Shilstone Farm, Exbourne, Meldon Reservoir footpath clearance, as well as providing assistance to the National Trust Warden at Castle Drogo.

STOC has been in existence for more than twelve years and undertakes a variety of tasks to enhance the environment in West Devon.

Many members are from Sticklepath. Others come from Okehampton and surrounding villages.

The group also provides an opportunity for students of the Leeze Centre to take part in community activities. Many of the assignments carried out are concerned with improving access to Dartmoor.

The group then works under close supervision of local Dartmoor Ranger, Ian Brooker.

Other organisations benefiting from STOC assistance include the Tarka Trail and National Trust. Work carried out by STOC includes footpath clearance and improvements, coppicing, footbridge erection, drainage of old leats and dry-stone wall repairs.

The group was instrumental in clearing the initial access for the cycle path near Sourton.

The group usually meets every Friday at the rear of Finch Foundry, Sticklepath at 10 am. Notices are often published in the Times giving details of projected work and locations.
