THE decision to extend Sunday trading to the pannier market is a sad one. The commercialisation of Sunday has reduced the quality of life over the country.
Being resident in the London Borough of Barnet and working in neighbouring Camden when the Sunday Trading Act was passed, we were shocked at the ramifications involved which do not appear to have been considered by the council.
All parking restrictions were extended to cover the extra 'Saturday' so people who had parked near their place of worship for decades or even their homes found their vehicles towed away to the pound, with a £100 plus charge to recover them.
In addition, shops that had never desired to open on a Sunday were forced into it in order to maintain their share of the market, with a consequential increase in traffic, police supervision and staffing.
We moved here to enjoy the English way of life, which we all love and do not want eroded. That includes a Sunday of peace and freedom from commercial interests. I can only urge the council to think again.
