A NOT-for-profit company offering computer training and repairs in Tavistock will be forced to close its doors unless new premises can be found.
Tavistock Computers and Training Ltd provides computer training and assistance to the senior generation as well as selling new and refurbished computers, undertaking repairs and selling stationery and cards. It will have to close its shop at the end of February if it cannot find other premises to move into. The current lease on the shop in the Pannier Market ended in October and since then the company has been looking for a new premises.
Janet Mashford, of Tavistock Computers and Training Ltd, said: 'We entered into negotiations for the larger shop that has stood empty since October 2013, but unfortunately to no avail. Despite appeals in the Times we have been unsuccessful. Maybe there is someone out there wanting to give up a shop and would consider selling the remaining lease. Maybe there is someone who is about to finish trading and their property may become vacant — please let us know.
'People may wonder why we need retail premises to deliver the computer training — we do not receive funding from the Government or charity. Therefore we must raise our own revenue. We do this by selling new and refurbished computers, doing repairs and selling stationery and cards. It's hard work and without the space to have more volunteers we just cannot go on at the small shop we have now.'
Ms Mashford said the company does not aim to make a profit and the business is registered at Companies House as a not-for-profit company, sometimes called a social enterprise. The aim of the company is to provide computer assistance and training.
She said: 'There was a provision for computer training in the library but government funding was withdrawn. The Alexander Centre only has funding for unemployed. so the provision is really needed more than ever now.
'If it comes to the end of February and we do close, I will not stop looking until we are back training again. After 15 years of teaching it's hard to stop completely. I would just miss the people who start as students and end as long term friends.'
Anyone can support the shop by donating unwanted laptops or by buying cards and computer items. The shop will re-open on January 14 until February 27. Opening hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm.
