I APOLOGISE unreservedly to Nigel Eadie for my misunderstanding about responsibility for the Bedford Square ?Daleks?. This was, however, only a passing comment in my original letter. He utterly fails to address my central point, which is that these planters are ugly and unsuitable, and in the past week several people have told me they completely agree. Of course, everyone has their own preferences and opinions about colours and styles, whether the subject is flowers, shoes, hair or cars. However, anyone commissioning or designing something for a public space must at least acknowledge that there is such a thing as good taste and bad taste. Ask anyone with a marketing background! Anything put in bedford Square all goes towards forming a perception of the town?s image and ?brand?, and I do not believe that Tavistock is done any favours by being presented as a plastic-and-petunias kind of place.
