A PLAQUE to commemorate the service of a West Devon councillor who represented the Chagford community for almost 50 years has been unveiled in the town. Fond tributes were paid at a ceremony attended by family, friends and colleagues to Cllr Peter Hill who died in July following a short illness. Born and brought up in Chagford, Cllr Hill was just 22 when he was first elected on to Okehampton Rural District Council as a councillor for the town in 1958 ?and he never lost the seat. For the last 33 years, he was a leading member of West Devon Borough Council and was its longest serving councillor. He was mayor of West Devon when he died. As the plaque was unveiled at the Market House, a building at the centre of the town, West Devon Mayor Cllr Ken Williams said: ?There is no more appropriate a place for Peter?s plaque to be placed than at the heart of Chagford.? Cllr Robert Sampson, who was elected as Chagford?s new borough councillor last month, said that there was enormous respect for Cllr Hill within the community. Preb Anthony Geering, who blessed the plaque, said Cllr Hill had served his community with integrity, courage and purpose.
