A NEW 80 bedroom hotel run by a ‘major UK operator’ is set to be built in Tavistock after a multi-million pound investment from West Devon Borough Council.

The borough council plans to build the hotel on Abbey Rise Car Park, next to Godolphin House, subject to planning permission and final funding approval from the full council.

The authority is planning to build and own the hotel on the 56-space car park and lease it to a ‘well-known hotel chain’ to operate, with the expectation that it could create up to 35 new jobs, add an extra £2.7-million to the local economy each year and see an additional 35,000 people visiting the town annually.

Councillors at West Devon have already agreed a multi-million pound investment in the development and the council has begun legal negotiations with an international chain.
